Repairing handles, drawers and doors are among the easiest of all repairs. Usually all thats required in repairing doors, drawers, and handles are a minimum of tools, usually including hammer and a screwdriver- items all do-it-yourselfers already have on hand.

Common problems with doors include a door not opening or closing properly, a broken or offset latch, and unsightly scratches in the surface of a door. Typically, if a door isnt opening or closing properly, the first things youll want to check are the hinges. This is the easiest and most obvious problem to solve. If the hinges are not set properly, simply take a hammer and lightly tap the hinges back into place. Another possibility, however, in the case of a door that wont open or close is that there is a foundation problem. This you will probably not be able to deal with yourself and will need the help of a professional. Typically, this will not be the problem. If the problem is with the latch, these are easy to replace. If you purchase a new latch it will come with installation instructions for the specific model. If the problem is a scratched wooden surface, using a stain is a good solution if the surface is stained and not painted. If its painted you may have to repaint the entire door. If the scratches are deep (i.e. in the wood itself) you might consider using a wood filler and sanding over the door before painting, When doing either job, remove the door from its hinges and lay it flat to paint or the paint is likely to drip and detract from the overall appearance.

With a loose handle, look at the back of the handle and see what kind of screw is holding it on. Get the appropriate screwdriver and try simply tightening the screw. If this doesnt solve the problem take the screw out and check to see whether or not its stripped out. If so, try replacing it with an identical screw. If this doesnt solve the problem, you may need a new handle. If you are able to find an identical matching handle, then replacing only the damaged one is feasible and very inexpensive. If there are many handles in the same area, such as with kitchen cabinets or bathroom drawers, and you cannot find a match, replacing them with a new matching set may be the only option. This can be expensive as handles can range from mere cents apiece to upward of ten dollars each. Upgrading to the more expensive decorative handles can really change the feel of an area, though, so it may be with saving up for. In the end it is much cheaper than other remodeling projects and has quite a dramatic effect, especially in an area where there are many of them.

Drawers are just as easily repaired. Often nothing is required in the way of tools to fix a drawer that is stuck or not sliding correctly. Rarely will it require more than a screwdriver. Drawers sometimes come off the track so check to see if this is the problem by removing the drawer completely from its shelving and reinserting it correctly on the track. Frequently this will correct the problem. If the problem is with the track itself, these can be replaced easily requiring only screws and a screwdriver. Remove the old one and measure it or take it with you to a building supply or hardware store to ensure the correct size. Buy and replacement and install it. Installing new ones is simple as the screw holes are already in place, marking where the new ones will go. If the problem is with a drawers handle, the same procedure as listed above will help diagnose the problem.
